When in Iloilo: Casa Mariquit

April 06, 2017

Iloilo isn’t just about delicious seafoods, batchoy and delicacies but it is also rich in cultural and historical places. Here you’ll find historic buildings, churches and old houses that are well retained. One of which is Casa Mariquit. Home by former Vice President Fernando Lopez Sr and his wife Maria “Mariquit” Javellana Lopez. Considered as one of the oldest houses in Iloilo. The house is believed to be 200 years old. (whoah)
The house is filled with relics of the past. Old memorabilia’s such as photos, old Polaroid cameras, vintage phones, books and many more.
The house also has it shares of haunted stories like any other old houses. But one thing for sure stepping inside Casa Mariquit will send goosebumps all over your body. It was believed that during WW2 the house library became a torture chamber used by the Japanese forces. There's also a tunnel that leads to the Old Jaro Belfry and was used by the Japanese as their secret hide out
It looks eerily creepy but nostalgic at the same time
